Reasons Of Poor Spoken English

Nowadays, many students can read and write in English well but they face problems in listening and speaking in English.

The main reason for this phenomena is due to lack of practice and exposure in their daily life. Some of the English teachers communicate with their students by using other languages but not English during the English lesson. This has greatly reduce the opportunity for students to listen or speak in English.

Furthermore, most of the students will use their own language to chat with their classmates when they are in the school. When they go outing or hang out with their friends, they still use their own language or dialect to communicate. This is because they want to escape from the difficulties when speaking in English and by using their own language their communication will go on smoothly.

 Majority of the parents will talk to their children by using other language instead of English.

Moreover, students tend to watch movies which use other language and decline to listen to English radio stations.

These are some of the reasons which cause today’s students’ spoken English to deteriorate drastically. Students only get the chance to speak in English once or twice a year during the English oral test in school.

In order to strengthen students’ command of English, English teachers should use English to conduct the English lessons and try to communicate in English with their students.
